Flying to Tucumán

San Miguel de Tucumán is one of the major economic hubs of north-western Argentina, with a strong sugar and lemon industry. It is also the gateway to Tafí del Valle and the Tucumán valleys. The private flight goes direct, with no stops or connections.

When to go

All year round. The sugar-cane harvest (zafra), from May to November, and the lemon harvest, in autumn and winter, set the pace for business; in summer, Tafí del Valle is the mountain escape.

Good to know

From the airport to downtown takes 20 to 30 minutes, a little more to Yerba Buena, at the foot of Cerro San Javier. Tafí del Valle is some 107 km from the city, at 2,000 metres; the road climbs through the Quebrada de los Sosa, a winding mountain route. Summer is the rainy season: storms can delay flights and the road to the valleys can be cut. Winter, by contrast, is dry and mild.
